Turney & Turney

We all know it takes family and friends to make a house a home. No one takes that more literally than Rick and Susan Turney and their son, Matthew, who have been building custom homes, renovations and additions for over 20 years, the past five years being on the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck.

Turney and Turney is a family owned company that encompasses the concept that developing trust and integrity with each of their clients is the cornerstone of their reputation. Building a custom home or enduring a major renovation or addition while living in your home can be potentially stressful to the owners. Rick, Susan and Matt want to make this experience as stress-free as possible. Once a major project begins, Rick or Matt are on-site every day that the site is active. An entire project calendar is planned prior to starting to insure that progress is consistent and that it will be finished on time. They work with very knowledgeable and reliable subcontractors who are consulted and often brought on-site in the planning stages. The owners are given a list of vendors to consult for everything including appliances, cabinets and bath fixtures. Each of these vendors provides knowledgeable staff to help each client with their choices.
Communication is extremely important prior to and during each step of the building and renovation process. Rick has designed some of his projects but many of his projects are the result of the area’s many fine architects with whom he has worked. Numerous hours are spent in advance of each project meeting with the architects and/or clients to make sure that the clients’ view of their project are shared by everyone involved. Continued communication with the homeowners is maintained throughout the entire project and beyond. Homeowners know that they can always call with any questions or concerns.

This never means that the plans are then written in stone. Changes are part of building and with Matt or Rick on-site every day during framing and beyond many changes can still come in to play. Rick’s design experience is very helpful in this regard as he feels that customization is the norm not the exception. He hates any wasted space in a home and many owners responded affirmatively to his suggestions for additional closets, storage space, butlers’ pantries or anything else that might accommodate his view of wasted space. Matt’s special expertise is trim and he loves the challenge of something new. One wonderful owner recently made his day by tearing a picture of trim out of a magazine that he had not as yet done. This was not the trim in the plans but Matt quickly determined what was needed to accomplish this, cancelled his existing trim order and proceeded. It was spectacular when finished and perfectly complimented the existing home.

Rick, Susan and Matt commented that building has experienced a transition in the past few years. They have noticed more emphasis on energy conservation, green building and economy from their owners. They are members of the U.S. Green Building Council and have stayed current with green building practices and energy conservation as do their sub-contractors. Matt is also an EPA Certified Renovator.

Their many years in the building industry and experience in design has enabled them to build to very high standards and stay within the owners’ budgets. When designs have exceeded the owners’ budgetary wishes they can often get back within budget with changes that will maintain the integrity of the project while not affecting the quality.
In being a family owned company, Rick, Susan and Matt want every owner to enjoy the experience of building a home, renovation or addition as much as they do.
